Believe it or not the LEGO Bugatti Chiron is based on a real car. That's right it wasn't just made up like the starship enterprise, the Chirion is a real motor vehicle that appears from time to time on this planet. And when you consider what an incredible motoir vehicle this is - its truly hard to believe. The brief to make the Chiron was quite simple. Bugatti boss Wolfgang Dürheimer – once head of Porsche R&D merely instructed that the chiron be better than the Veyron in every respect. A pretty tall order when you think of it.
So how fast is it?
Hmm. Well, officially with 50% more power than the Veyron it shouldn't accelerate to more than 300mph. Practically it's speed will be held back by the tyres. Chances are they'll explode long before it reaches full pelt. This is a shame as otherwise I could have travelled from London to Brum in about 20 mintes and saved myself the HS2 ticket price.
But seriously though..
OK , I was joking about saving the HS2 ticket price. At £2.5mn I could probably buy a lifetime travel card for me and everyone else in Helmel Hempstead. The Chiron is a carbonfibre-tubbed two seater with conventionally opening doors. It has an 8.0-litre, 16-cylinder engine in a W configuration. This means four banks of four cylinders around a common crankshaft. The upper two banks have a 90deg V between them. The lower two another 15deg each side of those. There are four turbos, two of which are blowing all the time and fed by eight exhausts apiece, to minimise what would otherwise be unimaginable lag. The other two are valved, to drop in and out depending on throttle position and rev range, and when they’re ‘on’, each of the four turbos is powered by four exhausts. That they drop in and out helps to make a near-flat torque curve of 1180lb ft from 2000pm to 6000rpm. Power goes mostly to the rear, but with a Haldex coupling pushing it to the front when the rears can’t cope. Which would be often.
So how does the LEGO model compare?
Well its not as big. In fact its 8 times smaller. And it won't get you down to the local Tesco. It is however and incredibly detailed, beautiful model that will have you drooling as you unpack the box.
